PROPER CARE
Replacing Your Automatic Transmission Filter*MEDIUM*
You should replace (or clean) your automatic transmission filter whenever the automatic transmission fluid is changed. Consult your owner's manual to determine whether your transmission has a reusable filter. Follow this general procedure:
- Drain the fluid according to steps 1-5 outlined in Automatic Transmission Fluid Change Procedure.
- After removing the transmission pan, identify the location of your transmission filter. The transmission filter is usually attached to the bottom of the valve body assembly.
- Before removing the filter from the valve body, refer to your service manual to be certain that no small parts such as pressure check valves or springs are held in place by the filter. The utmost of care must be utilized in these cases since the small parts could fall out and thus impair transmission performance.
- Wear eye protection. Select the appropriate tool to remove the filter screws. Filter screws may require a Phillips head, hex head, or torx head screwdriver. Note the original position of each screw if they vary in length so as not to incorrectly install them later on.
- If the transmission filter element is of paper or cotton variety, replace it with a new one, using the manufacturer's recommended part or equivalent. If the filter element is a metal screen, clean it according to the vehicle manufacturer's instructions. This usually entails using a solvent and letting it dry.
- Install the filter and tighten all screws to the appropriate specifications.
- Replace the transmission pan and gasket as outlined in steps 8 and 9 of Automatic Transmission Fluid Change Procedure.
